Christmas Shoeboxes

Many of you have prepared shoe boxes full of goodies for children who receive little or nothing at Christmas for several years... and may well have already started collecting suitable items for your next box! This year we are going to support the Link to Hope Shoebox Appeal

which delivers boxes to Families or Elderly People [not just the children] in need in Ukraine, Bulgaria, Moldova and Romania. Brochures with more information will be available in the narthex next week-end.

You can also look up the charity - www.linktohope.co.uk

CAFOD World Gifts

We also thought it would be a good thing for our parish to work together during Advent and over the Christmas season to provide something of longer lasting benefit to a family and/or community in need... maybe something like a Community Water Supply? - more later...We also thought it would be a good thing for our parish to work together during Advent and over the Christmas season to provide something of longer lasting benefit to a family and/or community in need... maybe something like a Community Water Supply? - more later...

Justice and Peace

CAFOD have asked us to hold a collection for the people of Ethiopia on 11th & 12th June. El Nino has caused the rains to fail twice and there is now flash flooding. 400,000 children face malnutrition. Please put whatever you can afford in the bucket on the font. If you are able to gift aid your donation you can make a donation via the website. CAFOD have also asked for our prayers.

Prayer for Ethiopia

Lord Jesus, you fed the hungry, you shared your bread with all. Your people in Ethiopia hunger now and we are called to share your bread. May rains fall on the dry and broken earth to quench your people's thirst, so seeds grow tall and flourish producing a bountiful harvest. May we share the blessings you give us and bring comfort to those in need. May we show our love through our actions so all have enough to eat.

Amen

Corpus Christi Procession

A very big Thank You to all who worked so hard to make our Corpus Christi procession such a joyful celebration.

The rich decoration of the altars and the prayers and music from each country was a beautiful example of the diversity of our parish and also the unity within it.

The annual event has now become very much a tradition of our parish. The large number of FIrst Holy Communion children in their outfits is a reminder of how much we must support these children in their faith. They are our parish of the future.

Every Little Helps...

Our homes produce almost 25% of the UK's polluting carbon emissions. Cutting down how much energy we use by turning off lights we don't need and not leaving appliances on standby helps the earth and could save us between £45 and £80 a year!

Are you tired because of the burden of your duties, because of frustration due to unsuccessful projects, becuase many misunderstand you? Are you heavy laden with guilt from past sins? Are you trying to find hope and meaning in life? Do not lose heart! Abandon yourself to Jesus in this "Sacrament of Love": He will refresh you!

Don't forget the 'Lent Jelly Bean Challenge'

Lent is a special time for thinking about what we do - trying to do good deeds, fasting and/or giving up something we enjoy. We would like you to keep some of your money each week and use it to buy a small bag of jelly beans for 20p after Mass. Each jelly bean represents something you have done during Lent to help you prepare to celebrate Easter such as:

  • Doing something especially nice, kind or generous for someone else
  • Giving something up such as your weekly sweets
  • Observing a day of fasting once a week

You may buy as many bags of jelly beans as you like. All we ask is that you keep them in a jar at home to share with your family on Easter Day. With each bag of jelly beans you buy you will be given a paper jelly bean to put in the giant jar at church. We would like to fill this jar to show how much the young people of our parish have achieved during this Lent.

The money raised through this challenge will go to helping Nicola, Catie, Victoria and Tiffany reach their target to go to World Youth Day in Poland in August.

  • Progress on using other Fairtrade products such as sugar, biscuits, fruit.
  • Support 'FairTrade Fortnight' [29th February - 13 March 2016] and promote 'FairTrade' at other times through worship and other events.

This is a minimum and we can surely do more? As well as buying from our monthly Fairtrade stall look out for the 'Fairtrade Mark' when you are shopping

FairTrade logo

It can be found on many iterms in additions to tea and coffee - sugar, friut, biscuits, chocolate, honey, jam, wine, T-shirts, socks, cotton pads, beauty products, cut flowers, gold and silver jewellery - to name but a few. THe 'FairTrade Mark' means:

  • A Fair and stable price to third world farmers and workers for their products.
  • Extra money to be invested in their communities
  • Greater respect for the environment
  • A stronger position for small farmers in world markets.

EVERY PURCHASE MAKES A DIFFERENCE...

so could you add one more Fairtrade product to your regular shop?

Our next Parish FairTrade stall will be on the 12th & 13th March 2016

Lent

To follow a Lenten path is to prepare for the wonderful event of Easter. During the next few weeks this and this alone should be our aim.

Compared to what the Lord has done for us, our Lenten observance of Fasting, Prayer and Almsgiving is a small price to pay. Let us , this week, begin Lent with a bang - not a whimper! 'Change your hearts not your garments' says scripture.

Let us think on what this means to us and how we can change our lives, opening our hearts to the power of God, opening our lives to his mercy.

Turn on the Taps - Lent Fast - Friday 18th February

Turn on the Taps

At Masses this weekend you will be offered a CAFOD Fast Day envelope. On Lent Fast Day we are asked to eat simply and to place the money saved into the envelope to enable CAFOD and its partners to continue their work with the poorest communities on earth. Once again the government has pledged to match what we raise, thereby doubling the value of our contributions. The envelopes can be returned in the collection plate over the next few weeks. This year CAFOD is focusing on providing safe drinking water in countries such as Uganda, which enable many girls to continue their schooling rather than trekking miles to fetch water.

Thank you for your continued generosity.

Further information is available at the CAFOD 'Turn on the Taps' website

What A Super Evening We Had...!

It would be unjust not to mention everyone, from the oldest to the youngest, who worked so hard to make our musical evening such a success. It was a fine example of just what a diverse and talented community we have - a real showcase of talent!

Well done everyone and many many thanks for all the effort everyone put in to producing it!

Calling all musicians and singers!

As part of the church fundraising concert we thought it would be fun to get together a "scratch" orchestra and singing group.

The pieces will be easy, quick to learn and require very little practice and it will be great fun. I promise simple parts for all instruments from beginner to advanced, please, please join us.

We also need a group of enthusiastic singers to lead the finale, and maybe sing one other piece, again, a simple piece and lots of fun.

If you think you'd like to join us and can come to the concert on Wednesday 3rd February at 6.30pm, come to a short rehearsal, after Sunday Mass on Sunday 31st January.

Email me for more details theresa.catherine.jones@gmail.com or just turn up!

Thank you

Sunday 17th January 2016 - THIS SUNDAY

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament 5:30 - 6:00 pm at the church to include Evening Prayer.

"Without prolonged moments of adoration, of prayerful encounter with the word, of sincere conversation with the Lord, our work easily becomes meaningless; we lose energy as a result of weariness and difficulties, and our fervor dies out. The Church urgently needs the deep breath of prayer, and to my great joy groups devoted to prayer and intercession, the prayerful reading of God's word and the perpetual adoration of the Eucharist are growing at every level of ecclesial life."

Pope Francis - Evangelii Gaudium

Christmas Flowers

Thank you to those who gave so generously towards Christmas flowers. At this time of year flowers are always very expensive and we do try to order from the wholesaler for our big events to cut costs. Auction days in Europe are also reduced during the lead up to Christmas so we chose to limit the flowers we used over the Christmas period but will continue to purchase flowers in memory of your loved ones as the weeks go by.

We hope you do enjoy the flowers in our church week by week and we encourage you to pray especially for those who are named on the list at the front of the church.
